Here's a nice bit of trivia: Tsuruta doesn't just draw cards — she works on the actual Pokémon games too, as a designer and illustrator. An art-school graduate (Tama Art University, no less), she's one of those people whose work quietly spans the whole franchise, games and cards both. That game-design sensibility shows up in her card work — a real feel for these characters as characters, not just subjects to paint. One to appreciate if you like knowing the person behind the card helped shape Pokémon itself.
